The Science Behind Chiropractic Treatment
Understanding how chiropractic medicine works starts with a basic understanding of the human nervous system. The nervous system is the control center of the body, with the brain controlling everything that happens in the body. The brain sends nerve impulses to the rest of the body through the spinal chord.
Because the spinal cord is so important to the overall function of the body, it is protected by the spinal column. The spine must be able to move, however, so the spinal column is made up of several individual bones called vertebrae that are separated by flexible discs. Nerves extend from between these vertebrae and transfer messages throughout the body.
When the spine is perfectly aligned, these nerves can send messages without interference. But sometimes a vertebrae will get pulled out of alignment which can cause nerve interference followed by pain and other symptoms.
